Movies During The Weekend

Only one movie during the weekend, cold and cloudy weather has its advantages, dudes! That and also, we had just a little time available, since we've been to the Comic Con.

Beautiful Boy:
The GF asked for this one, we had it on queue for quite a few months, until enough free time surfaced.
Mighty good movie.
The little kid who stars this movie is going to be Paul Atreides on the upcoming Villenueve's Dune, he certainly made quite a career since Call Me By Your Name.

Note To Self

Never update when running low on battery...
In order to get apt-get to a working condition, I had to issue a:

sudo dpkg --configure -a

And then:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get --fix-broken install

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
And finally, things got back to normal.

Saturday Night Chow Mein

Actually it was more like early, early Sunday than a Saturday night...
A steamy and amazingly good and hot Chow Mein, as usual, of course, and even if you don't believe it, lovingly made by the GF.
Excellent choice for a rather cold night.

To The ACC or Bust!

Saturday afternoon went with the GF and his nephew to the Comic Con Argentina, or ACC.
First time (for all of us, nephew is just a 10 y/o kid) amazed by the amount of people that were there.

Cold weather has many advantages, among one of those is the mighty GF Guiso Carrero.
Boiling hot and yummy.
Damn good, didn't even required adding grilled cheese.

Movies During The Weekend

We watched quite a few movies this weekend, mostly due because it rained on Saturday (even tho it was really warm for this time of the year).

The Island Murder:
Another American Experience doc, but this one wasn't as interesting as the others I've seeing.
We Netflixed this one.

Godzilla Final Wars:
Slept thru most of it, but the GF loved, she is a hardcore jaiku fan, so, right... She'll obviously love this movie, and she is waiting eagerly for the Godzilla King of Monster movie that opens this month.

Vice:
Mighty good movie... Wanted to see this one for quite some time.
Both the GF and I loved this one.

Saturday Night Pork Ribs

A rainy and somewhat cold Saturday night -no asado of course- so it is time -once again- for the amazing and mighty pork ribs (with BBQ sausage) along with a gorgeous and delicious spinach pie and a decent amount of rice -with soy sauce- on the side.
All of it, of course, lovingly made the GF.

All work and no fun make hictio a dull boy.
All work and no fun make hictio a dull boy.
All work and no fun make hictio a dull boy.
Lotsa work these last couples of days, no time for anything including my beloved Oesediez.

Nano Tangerines (XIX)

It's been a while since I post a pic of our tangerines.
They are still going strong, despite this so-called autumn.
They are effing dusty but in good health.

Movies During The Weekend

Only one movie this weekend, we had a special belated anniversary dinner on Saturday and not much free time on Sunday, as we rode like maniacs on our bicycles.

The Circus:
An excellent PBS documentary, we Netflixed this one with the GF, not really convinced that we'll made thru the whole of it, but, as usual, American Experience never disappoints.

Kernel Woes on Linux Mint 19.1

I'm having problems with the latest kernel released on Linux Mint 19, it seems to boot, but I get no video at all, not even on a TTY.
The kernels that aren't working are:

4.15.0-48
4.15.0-50

Currently booting an older kernel (4.15.0-47) with which everything works A Ok.
The same thing happens with the T60 and the T60p.
Annoying as hell.

Juggling RAM Around (4)

Ok, yeah.. It is time for another round of "some gain a little, and some loose a lot"...
Got a 2GB module from the MacBook White and put it on the T60 and a 1GB module from the T60 and shove it on the MacBook White...
The T60 got an extra 1GB, while the Macbook lost it.
Tested, just for shit and giggles, if possible to use it on the T60... It simply refuses to even boot with that module.

Sunday Night Pasta

Some amazing ricotta raviolis, with the all time classic GF Stew and sliced cheese.
Along too were some left overs added to the party, and none the less those were from a milanesa napolitana, cut in tiny little pieces, that we had Saturday night on a restaurant with the GF.

Thermal Paste on The MacBook 3.1

It was time to do it.
It is a major PITA, but I had to.
18 screws, not counting the ones on the cooler itself.
The ifixit guide on another screen and patience, a lot of patience.
The procedure went A Ok, listening to Spotify from lappie as I type this.

Customizing My Google Cursor

My own TIbeam, the way I like it
Yes, another one of those posts on how to get rid of the damn I-beam cursor...
I have a thing for cursors, specifically, for cursors that do my bidding.
Right now I'm using a very nice cursor them called Google Cursor, that, yes, tries to replicate the look and feel of the Chrome OS cursors, but, this being Linux, I certainly can customize my cursor icons the way I see like them...
Which is something that Chrome OS don't let you do... At all..

These are the changes I made to the Google Cursor theme to suit my needs, after installing it on ~/.icons/

cd ~/.icons/Google_Cursor/cursors/

cp xterm xterm.ORIG
cp ibeam ibeam.ORIG
cp text text.ORIG

cp left_ptr xterm
cp left_ptr ibeam
cp left_ptr text

Movies During The Weekend

Ok, so, yeah, right, summer ended for good, no more asados, and also, as the rain piles up, no more outdoor stuff to do and shorter days.
So, that means more movies, which is good.
Two movies this weekend.

Brexit:
The GF thought, or was planning, on sleep this one thru, but, it caught her attention, and even tho she was beat, finally watch it with me... We tried a couple of times before, but we were really tired and fell sleep.
Really good movie, of course, as usual, it portraits people as stupid.

Green Book:
Much better than what I thought it'll be.
The GF simply loved it.

Under The Silver Lake:
Loved -sort of, actually it was scary as hell- his last movie.
This one is pretty messed up, no doubt that's intentional, but, what a hell, man!

Linux Mint 18.3 on The MacBook White 3.1

Yesterday updated Linux Mint (XFCE) on the MacBook White to 18.3.
The update, of course, went smooth but, after the update, came the newer kernels.
And that's when the problems started.
The newest kernel (4.15.0-48) works, that is, the lappie does boot and you can use it, WiFi works, etc. etc.
But it took ages to boot, and then, once on the LightDM login manager it also took quite a while to actually be able to type anything and then again it took quite a lot of time to get a working Desktop, once past the login manager.
It was unbearable a true PITA.
What I did was to revert to an older kernel, but it took a while since I wasn't able to access the GRUB menu (via Shift key upon booting) not sure if that was because I'm running an encrypted LVM or waht a hell, but the only option was to boot the newest (and slowest) kernel and then edit the file "/etc/default/grub" and add the option GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE="menu" to the end of the file, and then, after a sudo update-grub and a reboot I was able to choose the kernel I want to boot.
Didn't have time to investigate the slowdown for the moment using an older kernel on the lappie let me regain control of it.

Apollo 11

Great, magnificent.
Saw it last night, alone, as the GF would thought it might be a bit too much for her.
The quality of the image is truly out of this world -pun intended-.

Saturday Night Pork Ribs

With Autumn at full speed the impossibility of making asados is forcing us to more traditional cooking.
But, then again, the GF did a wonderful job with these pork ribs (with BBQ sausage) along with spinach pie and a some small rice with soy sauce on the side.

Between Adapta & Numix

I've noticed that for the last couple of years there were only two GTK themes that I use, maybe for a little while, say, a week or so, switch to a different one, but, invariably, I go back to these two.
The themes are, of course, Numix and Adapta.
Obviously I love those pretty much, they even look amazing without any composite working, that is, even without the drop-shadow effect enabled both themes look slick, modern and kick ass.
Basically, if I want something warm, I go with Numix, and if I'm on the mood for a cooler, bluish theme, then Adapta; matter of fact, IMHO, Numix is like the new Human theme, another GTK theme that I used to love, way back when Ubuntu was famous for its Browns hues.

Movies During The Weekend

As the weather gets better and better (that is, colder and colder) the amount of watched movies increases...
In this case, two during past weekend.

The Towering Inferno:
Man, it must been something like 20 years since the last time I've seen this one...
Stevie steals the show, as it should be.

Catwalk: Tales From The Cat Show Circuit:
We Netflixed this one, the GF is a cat freak, so I recommended this one eons ago, but we didn't get the time to watch it until last Sunday.
Nice documentary, full of beautiful and ridiculous looking cats.

Problems with MySQL after an unattended-upgrades

Wake up this Labor Day to a couple of emails from the Monit on remote a server, reporting a problem with the MySQL process.
Checking the emails from that server, this is what the unattended-upgrades email reported:

Checking if update is needed.
Checking server version.
Error: Server version (5.7.25-0ubuntu0.16.04.2) does not match with the version of
the server (5.7.26) with which this program was built/distributed. You can
use --skip-version-check to skip this check.
mysql_upgrade failed with exit status 3
dpkg: error processing package mysql-server-5.7 (--configure):
 subprocess installed post-installation script\
 returned error exit status 1

Got onto the server, and this is what the MySQL error log (/var/log/mysql/error.log) reported:

2019-05-01T06:25:42.111425Z 0 [ERROR] InnoDB: Unable to lock ./ibdata1 error: 11
2019-05-01T06:25:42.111470Z 0 [Note] InnoDB: Check that you do not already have another mysqld\
process using the same InnoDB data or log files.

So, this usually means that there are more than one MySQL server running.
First thing first, stop MySQL, and then, kill any other MySQL process by hand.
Then, run apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade, this finished the MySQL update A Ok.
Then started the MySQL server, and everything was kosher.

The (Sort of) Death of The T60p (II)

My beloved T60p is once again, giving me some problems...
Today it took something like 10 boot attempts until I finally got a working system, strange thing, since I got to the LVM passphrase input Ok (it obviously accepted the typed input and passed as correct), but after that nothing happened, just a black screen.
