286K and counting!

Yeap... That's right!
It has been a while since the last "1K" up post, I have begun a new music listening "regime", listening to a lot less music than before, for no special reason, simply don't feel like it.

GenMon: Date Script (2)

A little enhancement on the previous script to show the date using GenMon on the XFCE Panel.
The script is basically the same, but this one has a couple of benefits as well.
Here is the script:

#!/usr/bin/env bash
echo """ | "$(date +"%A %d %b %Y")""
echo """"
echo ""xterm -hold -e /usr/bin/cal""
## EoF ##

And these are the benefits:
It prints the date on the format I like (plus a pipe for separation with other indicators) but also disables popup message when mouse over it and also, when clicked, it executes an term with a calendar showing the current date and month.

XFCE: Set Keyboard Layout and Disable Caps Locks

Usually set my keyboard layout and configuration by editing the file: /etc/default/keyboard, like this:

XKBMODEL="pc105"
XKBLAYOUT="us"
XKBVARIANT="alt-intl"
XKBOPTIONS="ctrl:nocaps"
BACKSPACE="guess"

But, and I really don't know why, this time on Buster it didn't work.
So, time for a Plan B... I had to do it using setxkbmap and setting it up thru Settings > Session and Startup > Application AutoStart and adding two entries, one for the language and other for the Caps Locks.
The entries look like this:

/usr/bin/setxkbmap -layout us -variant intl
/usr/bin/setxkbmap -option ctrl:nocaps

Sunday Lunch Chicken

Once you start, strange things don't stop happening...
And yet another Sunday with a lunch...
Although this time it was a fantastic set of sliced chicken breasts, BBQ style, with white rice as topping.
Deliciously made by the GF, of course.

Not Sid Anymore

Yeah, it didn't last long...
Sid is nice, but I find a bit of PITA to have to be updating stuff all the time, and for my use case I really don't need the newest of the new software, at all.
So, since we are having an election day weekend, I had a "day off" today (that is, no GF), ended up using the time to install Buster (32 bits, of couse) (XFCE, of course) on the T60p.

Sunday Night Pasta

Boy did we had a foodie feast this past weekend or what?
The classic Sunday raviolis, drowned on the GF Stew and grilled cheese, they were magnificent.

Ok, now it's official, whatever was left of winter is dead, gone, kaput.
From now on, effing heat will set the course and the tone of just about everything.

Sunday Lunch Asado

Another special feature!
On this case Mother's Day Special and not a dinner, but a lunch!
Luckily the weather was rather nice for making an asado, not too hot and not too sunny.
And it was certainly a beast of an asado...
For the GF, my mother and me BBQ'd 3 chicken breasts, 1 KG of asado de tira, 3 choripáns, 1 bife de chorizo (pictured) & 3 bifes de cuadril.
Also, along for the ride, BBQ'd some carrots (a favorite of mine).

XFCE is Getting Quirky

Came up with this error (or warning) message while setting up the T60p with its new Sid install.
First time I see something like this, guess you could say that things are really getting classy on the Linux Desktop.

Movies During The Weekend

Only one movie this weekend, a rather atypical weekend I might say.

Midsommar:
Visually stunning, longish film.
made by the same director who directed Hereditary, which IMHO, it was better than this one.
The GF completely loved it.

The current Linux Mint desktop

Been a while since I posted the Linux Mint desktop on my beloved Dell XPS M1330, to be honest, nothing has really changed a lot, except for the weather...
On the screenshot of the last Linux Mint desktop post, Buenos Aires was "enduring" an amazing 5 degrees Celsius nowadays we're ten degrees above that...

Saturday Night Chow Mein

Yes, another Saturday with Chow Mein!
Asado is on, tho, but for tomorrow as a special celebration, since it is Mother's Day around here.
So, the GF tonight made once again her famous Chow Mein, and I have to say that I'm a happy camper.

And Yet Another Sid

Or better yet, another XFCE.
Replaced the HDD on the amazing, heavy and trusty T60p with another one, leaving i3 behind, maybe momentarily.

So, installed Buster XFCE, and then, switched the thing to Sid, following the steps I listed here, that is, editing the sources.list file and then apt commands.
So after something really close to 600 MB of downloads (and deleting about 200 MB of autoremove) later, things look rather fine.

Yes, i3 is really cool, but my workflow is wired to XFCE, what can I say?
That, and also, I wanted to see how the newest of the new XFCE (4.14 at this time) performs on the T60p and what new wonders has to offer.

GenMon: CPU temperature Script

Another script I'm using with Generic Monitor on the XFCE Panel.
This one prints the CPU temperature, but also disables any sort of output when you do a mouse over.

#!/bin/bash

cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp > /tmp/cpu_temp
echo """ | "$((`cat /tmp/cpu_temp`/1000))"°"""
echo """"

Movies During The Weekend

A cool, relaxed weekend, in part because it rained like Hell on Saturday.
So, we did a bit of catch up, maybe forced, with a couple of TV shows.

Star Trek: Discovery:
We watched the two final episodes from Season 2, it was hard, but someone had to do it, I guess.
Not much to say about this, I guess... Except that, no, most definitively the last season doesn't do it, at all.

Project Blue Book:
I have been struggling with this one for the last 3 weeks, or so.
I'm a big fan of The X Files, at least of the mythological episodes; so I thought that this new series might be amazing, but it turned out to be quite dull and boring.
It was almost painful to go thru it.
A real shame, since it has everything to be fantastic.

Nose Dive!!!!

After the intense rains on Saturday, we had a glorious and amazing drop down in temperature!
Luckily, the damned summer is, at least for the moment, a bit distant (?)

The Current Debian Desktop

This time with a bit of a flashback.
A favorite icon theme of days gone by, GNOME Colors, particularly GNOME Human, a theme I've used and abused some 11 years ago (Boy... Time surely flies when you use Linux...).
Also sporting a "revisited" (modified by yours truly) favorite wallpaper, the Ubuntu wallpaper from Hardy Heron (8.04).
I used to love the "Ubuntu Browns", back in the day.

Saturday Night Chow Mein

It rained like hell the last couple of days so no asado this time.
So the GF made me a steamy, wonderful and mighty Chow Mein bowl, all of it for me.

Sunday Night Pasta

A Special Edition this time.
Featuring a wonderful pineapple pizza, the best pizza flavor in the entire known Universe, and  both the GF and me agree on that.

Blue Thunder (Sort of) Lost a Pedal

Busted a pedal on Blue Thunder last Saturday while a ride with the GF.
Made a quick and dirty field repair, but I'm afraid it didn't last long.
A new set of pedals is on the horizon.

Saturday Night Asado

Last night it was time for some pork ribs wih BBQ and carrots.
The pork took about two hours to make, and hour each side.
This was the second time I grill a pork -or parts of it- and comparing the pictures to the previous one, this time the fire was a bit more intense.
Also grilled some chicken breasts and a couple of other miscellaneous chicken parts for the GF to eat during the week.
It was a bitch to start the fire for the asado, since it has rained for the last couple of days, and thing were mostly humid (what a surprise in Buenos Aires, right?)

The Risks of Not Updating Sid on a While

This is what happens when you don't update Sid in a while... 166 packages need to be updated.
Guess in this case, I haven't updated it on something like 3 weeks.

The Current Debian Desktop

I have to say that I'm still sporting a light theme, this past week it was the turn of the mighty and glorious Arc theme.
As usual, on my beloved Optiplex 755, with the old school Apple Cinema Display.

Movies During The Weekend

We had a relaxed, sunny (somewhat hot) weekend, so not much time for movies, but, nevertheless, we watched some.

Star Trek Discovery:
Our weekly episode, but, boy oh boy, it is getting harder and harder.... This season sucks so much, at least so far (we are on episode 11).

Crawl:
Nice one, plenty of action and thrills.
Both the GF and I were waiting for this one ever since we saw the trailer.

GenMon: Date Script

A little script I'm invoking via the Genmon plugin to print the current date on the XFCE Panel, it also prevents anything to show up when you do a mouse over on it.

#!/bin/bash
echo """ | "$(date +"%A %d %b %Y")""
echo """"

## EoF ##

The first empty string and the pipe are there for spacing between the different GenMon scripts I'm running on my Panel.
