Out With The Sneakernet

After, I guess, some 5 years or so, I'm back onto the Dropbox.
Luckily, I've kept my account active all thru this years, and I'm truly, sincerely fed up with my current manual backup setup (but I'll keep it as well, just to be safe).

Juggling RAM Around (2)

Time for another RAM swapping...
This time took RAM from the T430 and slapped onto the MBP, and vice versa.
The T430 lost 4 and the MBP got 4, both seem to be just fine.

Saturday Mighty Meat

Not milanesas this time, but an exquisite oven cooked meat, along with some -again- oven cooked potatoes and sweet potatoes.
Simply delicious.

Thursday Night Panqueque

Since Friday was a holiday, on Thursday night went out to dinner with the GF.
Dessert was a strange panqueque, the always mighty and classic dulce de leche mixed with sliced apples.
Damn that was good.

Mirror, Mirror

Well, this is a new one...
It popped up this morning, I've never seeing this error in the years running Mint.
Simply changed the mirror, as the same error message suggests, and everything seems to be A Ok.

Sunday Night Pasta

A mighty combination.
Ravioli and Sorrentinos Marplatenses, together, living in perfect harmony.
On top of that carrots and beets.
Also a meat stew (non GF made) and salsa blanca.

Movies During The Weekend

A mixed bag this weekend.

Star Trek: Insurrection:
And with this one, the last of the Star Trek (at least the ones before the very much needed reboot) movies has been watched.
This one is completely forgettable.

Godfather III:
Wanted to see this one for quite a while, it was the only one I've missed from the trilogy.
Certainly not as good as the other two, besides, it doesn't look at all like it has been set in the late 70's/ early 80's.

Batman Ninja:
The GF picked this one, or, rather, she was really interested on seeing it.
I have to say that I pretty much slept thru the whole movie.

Downsizing:
And last but not least... And amazing movie, a total and complete surprise, the GF and I loved it.

Un-busted Tango

As of yesterday, The Crack In The LCD Continuum Is No More.
Will see how this goes, etc. etc. etc.

Void Linux On The Thinkpad T43

Installed Void Linux (32 bits XFCE) on the T43 today.
It took about 40 minutes, no problem whatsoever.
Resource usage is minimal (I'm running on a non encrypted file system, tho), RAM usage is about 200 MB after booting.
Suspend works Ok.
Next step, or experiment, will be making an encrypted install.

Now this certainly looks promising... I can only dream about a new snow... Might this winter bring one around here.

Juggling RAM Around

Time to open the old XPS M1330 and see where the hell can I find some RAM for the old lappie.
Unfortunately, the only available RAM I have right now it is been used on the MacBook White.
Got some from the T60 (anyway, that lappie is sort of dead now) and besides, 32 bits simply doesn't cut anymore, right?

I Want (To Read) My MTV

Started to read I Want My MTV right after finishing the one on the history of Star Trek.
Haven't dug much yet, but seems really interesting.

Winter (It Looks Like) Is Coming

At last, temperatures around here have taken a real nose dive, and they also they remained down.
Who knows, maybe we get to see some snow, again.

To Boldly Finish It

Well, I finally finished... It took me quite a while, yeah... I admit it, but what a hell, this is a hell of a year.
It turned out to be a really interesting book, and entertaining too.

Movies During The Weekend

The quest to see every Star Trek movie went on... This time it was the turn to see some really, really crappy ones...

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier:
Boy oh boy, was this one a piece of crap or what?
I'm sorry for Bill, but he certainly blew it with this one.

Lady Bird:
Obviously, the best of the bunch.
The GF picked this one, I was a bit reluctant, but it turned out to be fantastic.
Sort of a "Pretty in Pink" for millennials.

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country:
Things picked up a little bit with this one, as a farewell to the original cast from TOS is good, but there were better movies made from Star Trek, my all time fav is still, no doubt about it, The Wrath of Khan.

I've seeing the future, and it looks like I'm gonna be making a lot of asado...
With chopped wood that is.

At Last!

We finally had what you might really call an effing nose dive around here!
At last, let's just hope this time is for real, the summer is dead.
May this god damn cold weather lasts until December at least!

The current Linux Mint desktop

The upper screenshot shows my current setup, running a custom made theme, based on Linux Mint's "Mint-Y" but with some added elements from "Mint-X".
Taking a lot of inspiration from Cinnamon's Mint-X theme (lower screenshot).

Saturday Night Milangas

A slightly blurred picture of our traditional milanesas for an also slightly chill Saturday night.
This time, along with the oven cooked potatoes were also some gourd, crispy, almost black, the whole thing delicious.

Goodbye Global Menu

I've tried, I really do, it was really good to find you once again, and on XFCE it was -sort of- really nice to use you, but... It is not you, it's me.
Maybe I'm old now, maybe is something I left -or lost- behind, I don't know, the thing is, I got used to the "traditional" desktop setup, with a Taskbar/ Panel on the bottom of the screen, etc. etc.
Over the years I've used and tried many different Global Menu incarnations, and I was always pretty happy with them, but it is time to change.

Movies During The Weekend

Our little quest to watch every single Star Trek movie continues... Along with some other movies, in retrospect, we watched a shit load of movies, besides "Space Seed", which the GF haven't seen.. Believe or not, she is not a fan of TOS...

Star Trek III:
So, so... I have to say that I slept thru mot of it.
Don't recall when I saw it when I was a kid, but to me this one is not as good as the other Star Trek movies that have been made at that moment.

The Quiet Man:
Amazing. Simply amazing.
Guess it must have been 20 years since I saw it for the last time, a first time for the GF, she absofuckinglutely loved it too.

Black Panther:
What a fucking fuck, who the hell watches this piece of crap? I mean, does someone really get out the house, go to a cinema and pay to see this piece of shit...
What a waste of time.

Star Trek IV:
Mighty good, it aged really well. The GF loved it too.
Thanks to The Fifty-Year Mission: The First 25 Years (yes, I'm still reading it... What can I say, I have little free time...) I found out this was the most successful of all Star Trek movies to date.

Rainy Autumn

It has been raining or at least cloudy for the last two weeks around here.
Apparently tomorrow things will change and the Sun (and at last!!) lower temperatures will be here, let's just hope they are here for good.

Sunday Night Pasta

Mighty sorrentinos this time, but, not only sorrentinos, but Sorrentinos Marplatenses, as usual, bathed on the glorious GF stew.

Deleting Old Kernels

This is how I'm deleting old kernel nowadays.
The idea is to do it easily, but most important, safely.

First off, get the running kernel, never delete this one ;)

uname -a

And then get the list of all the installed kernels (and related stuff):

dpkg --get-selections | grep linux-headers && dpkg --get-selections | grep linux-image

This is a sample list of the output of the above:

And then, simply delete the ones you don't like:

sudo apt-get purge linux-image-4.4.0-119-generic\
 linux-headers-4.4.0-119-generic linux-image-extra-4.4.0-119-generic

In this case, deleting the kernel 4.4.0-119 and all related files.

Baby Nexus 10 Steps

Will see how this goes and all that...
The idea, given the time, is to use the old and battered Dell Latitude X1 as a chassis for this whole thing.
I see the beginning of a long friendship...

Halt And Catch Fire (Literally)

Man, I don't know... According to Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, critical response got better as the series progressed, but to me it was just the opposite.
Saw the first season about four and half years ago, and I thought the first one was the best, in fact, took me years to actually watch the other three.
Anyhow, IMHO, the fourth season was, by far, the worst one.

A New Life (or Keyboard) For The T60p

Well, it is done.
The glorious (almost mythical) T60p keyboard is gone for good, had to cannibalize the one from the T60, since it wasn't working at all...
Tried cleaning it, disassembling it, etc., etc. Nothing worked.
Couldn't even login onto the lappie, since I wasn't able to type my password in full.
What a bummer.

Movies During The Weekend

An extra large weekend around here, so we had time watch movies like monkeys

Call Me By Your Name:
A cool one, selected by the GF, a real find... I was sure it was going to be a really boring one, but it turned out to be quite good.
Not that there is anything wrong with it and later.

Lucky:
An amazing cast on a somehow boring movie, a real surprise to know who directed this movie.

Wild Wild Country:
I saw this one, the GF has already saw it.
Really good entertaining, with amazing stock footage.
One thing only, the thumbnails that Netflix choose are crap, I would never ever watch that based on that, unless it was a reco.

Power Rangers:
I had this one on file or to be watched, for something like a year.
Don't know why the hell I even bother.

Star Trek: Nemesis:
A bit boring, but a real find to see a skinny Bane.

Star Trek: Generations:
Another one on the continuing saga of watching all the Star Trek movies and series available with the GF.

No $HOME Encryption For You! (Ubuntu 18.04)

So, the new Ubuntu LTS release doesn't provide with the ability to encrypt your $HOME during the installation:

The installer no longer offers the encrypted home option using ecryptfs-utils. It is recommended to use full-disk encryption instead for this release.

Link

What a bummer, man! I was using that option since I don't remember when... And, on top of that, I was using an encrypted LVM too.
The beauty of the thing was ho easy was to do the whole thing, right from the installer, without much fuss you ended up with a fairly secure setup right from the get to...

The Reluctant Kernel Update

Maybe I'm having a senior moment here, not really sure, but I sincerely don't recall seeing this before...
Usually all the kernel updates, thru Linux Mint's Update Manager, come in pairs, a package for the Kernel, and another for headers, but this time only one Kernel is available for update.
I've seeing this on a couple of my lappies, except the MacBook White, where Update Manager offered to install both packages.
Tested the (somewhat cropped) install on the T60p, and everything went A Ok, even after a reboot, needless to say, all of the Kernel packages were installed.

Hardware problems.

Couple of hardware problems around here...
The crack on the MacBook Pro LCD is getting bigger, what a fucking bummer! It is now affecting the "lighted" portion of the screen, not just the black bezel.
Damn, damn and damn...

The other one is that the T60p keyboard is acting really funky, pressed keys aren't actually being typed... A major PITA, as I can't type my password.
I'm afraid I'll have to replace it with the keyboard from the T60.

Maybe both lappies are starting to show its age and usage, particularly the T60p.
