The Current Debian Desktop

Not much has changed since last week, but, hey, what a hell, this is my beloved daily driver as of today, and I like to keep a record of it.

(No) Movies During The Weekend(s)

Haven't posted about movie weekend in quite a while simply because lately we aren't watching any movie with the GF during the weekends.
One of the drawbacks of (almost) summer, I guess... Nice weather, outdoor activities (mostly bicycle rides and asados) and no time to watch movies...

288K and counting!

And another thousand up.
Yes, I'm progressing way slower than I used to, but, what a hell... Who's counting anyway, right?

Re-Rogue One

Re-watched Rogue One last night, was toying with the idea of doing so for quite some time, as I simply love it.
Never understood why Disney was able to green light such a good movie, and then simply destroy the franchise with the other Star Wars movies that followed it... For a while I was under the impression that they were going in two directions, the one that pushed the franchise forward (with bad movies) and then the one that expanded the franchise Universe (with somehow better movies)...
But, then they released Solo: A Star Wars Story, and my theory went to hell.

Sunday Night Pasta

Amazingly good pasta this Sunday night.
The usual raviolis, this time, ricotta all of them, with the GF Stew, and a shit load of carrots, both boiled as well as the little few that survived the Saturday night asado.
As I already said, a fantastic way to finish a weekend.

Debian Buster on The Thinkpad T43

Installed Buster on Saturday, wiping the Sid install I've made back on Juǹe.
Got fed up of installing updates all the time, every time... The T43 is wayy too slow and I use this one quite sparingly, so Sid will eventually break, besides, I love the predictability of Stable, what can I say?
Even tho I've used the non-free installer, with the extra proprietary drivers, and that the installer did recognized the T43's WiFi card, it was impossible to connect to the AP, so, in the end, did the install using the old and trusty PCMCIA WiFi card, simply removed it after the install is finished, and things went kosher.

A Chicken Wire Sunday

No poultry around here, but the GF had a few chores on her todo list, and since the day was great (lots of sun, not too hot) we took the time today to finish that thing.

Saturday Night Asado

An amazing asado this Saturday, a bife the chorizo, a chorizo a shit load of carrots and some potatoes with egg (not BBQ'd).
It was a somehow cold and windy night, but someone had to make the asado!

The Current Debian Desktop

Not much has changed since last week, but I like to keep track of how my daily driver desktop looks like.
This one is a bit lighter than the previous one, maybe because of the insane heat we had this past week... But always the trusty ole Adapta.

And with some amazingly good raviolis (ricotta as well as chicken) to go with.
The way every weekend should end.

Pay special attention how tidy is all the wood setup and ready to be used.

We Are So Royally Fucked

There are no words (in any language) to describe how I shiite on the Buenos Aires summer, that, it didn't even started yet.
This is the forecast for tomorrow.

Saturday Night Asado

As usual, a mighty good asado this Saturday night, even tho it rained in the morning, things were all dry and ready to BBQ by the early evening.
So, a magnificent asado de chorizo it was, along with a glorious chorizo and some BBQ's carrots.
The only good thing about summer in Buenos Aires, the rest of it can go to Hell.

There is No Turning Back

Heat Iacta Est, from now on, things will get much, much worse.
There is no chance in Hell to get decent weather until next April or so.

OpenBSD: Sayonara

Well, at least for now, the OpenBSD test on the T60p goes onto the freezer.
Two really annoying problems arose:

+ The WiFi connection dropped all the time every time
+ XFCE programs crashing

The first one was amazingly annoying, it started, or I first noticed it, when I was installing packages after the initial base install -and after issuing a syspatch and a reboot-.
This one is, obviously, a major deal breaker

The second one was nuance, but a problem nonetheless.
It happened with the Settings program, specifically with the Window Manager one, it dumped a core every time I've switched a theme and the other one was trying to open the "Session and Startup" one, it simply didn't happen... No matter what, it was impossible to open that program.

No time to debug any of those right now.

Sunday Night Pasta

Once again the Sunday Night Pasta are raviolis!!!
This time with an over the counter stew, as the GF had no time to make her world famous.
But we had the gift of adding little pieces of the chorizo candelario from our Saturday Night Asado.

Blue Thunder Got a New Stand

Yesterday added a new stand to BT, the original one was all bent and it hardly kept the bike standing.
The thing is, the old one is impossible to remove, the damn bolt that keeps it in place is impossible to loose...

Saturday Night Asado

Yes, it has been quite a while since we were able to have our regular Saturday night asados...
We had a special one on a Sunday afternoon, due to Mother's Day, but this is the official return to our beloved Saturday night asados.
On this occasion, we had a bife de chorizo steak, with a rather ugly looking but simply delicious chorizo candelario, as well as potatos and BBQ cooked carrots.

287K and counting!

Ok, yes, another thousand up.
The habit took me back, even tho I was a bit hesitant to do so... But the last week started once again to hear a shit load of music once again.

OpenBSD: Now With More Encryption!

After trying to encrypt the $HOME partition on the OpenBSD install I did, well... Things went a little complicated, so, in the end went cold turkey with the thing, and simply re-installed, this time with full disk encryption, using the instructions from here: Full Disk Encryption.
No problem whatsoever, the installation went like silk, and everything was kosher with the lappie.

OpenBSD on The Thinkpad T60p

Installed OpenBSD today on the T60p.
The installation took about 2 hours (including XFCE, which BTW, it is the latest of the latest 4.14 go OpenBSD go!!!...)

Welcome to the OpenBSD/i386 6.6 Installation program.
(I)nstall

I choose install, of course!

Choose your keyboard layout? L
us.swapctrlcaps

Great Scott! This was a great find, don't remember this layout option the last time I've installed OpenBSD.

System hostname? t60p

Original, right?

Which network interface do you wish to configure?
em0

IPv4 address for em0? 10.120.10.14
Netmaks for em0? 255.255.255.240
Ipv6 address fro em0? [none]
Available network interfaces are: em0 ath0 vlan0.
Which network interface do you wish to configure? (or 'done') [done]

Choose em0, and setup a fixed IP address, I was under the impression that em0 was the WiFi NIC, but I was wrong! See below.

Default Ipv4 route? 10.120.10.1

The default gateway

DNS domain name? arenales.lan

My own ridiculous domain inside my home.

DNS nameservers? 8.8.4.4 8.8.8.8

Thanks, Google.

Which disk is the root disk? sd0
Use (W)hole disk or (E)dit the MBR? [whole]

This is another new, IIRC.. Auto partitioning! Used the default, although, for a personal use lappie, I don't like to have other partition than /, in order to maximize the available HDD space.

Let's install the sets!
Location of sets? (cd0 disk http or 'done') [cd0]
No filesystems found on cd0
Location of sets? (cd0 disk http or 'done') http
HTTP Sever? (hostname of 'done') https://openbsd.c3sl.ufpr.br/

Sets: Installed all of them except for comp & games

Reboot the lappie, and then:

syspatch

So you update the system, and then, again reboot.

usermod -G wheel MY_USERNAME

Add my user to wheel, so I can use su.

pkg_add zile

Installed my lightweight Emacs, so I can edit "/etc/rc.local" and "/etc/rc.conf.local"

Then installed XFCE a login manager and some needed packages:

pkg_add xfce-extras slim slim-themes consolekit2 polkit

WiFi setup:
Like I said, I was under the impression that em0 was the WiFi NIC, but it turned out to be ath0... So, to use it simply create the file /etc/hostname.ath0 and set it up (there is no need for extra firmware).
To make it use a fixed IP address, edit the file mentioned above like this:

nwid SID wpakey PASSWORD
inet 10.120.10.14 255.255.255.240 NONE

Reboot

The Current Debian Desktop

Nothing really new on this one, this is pretty much how I like things on my desktops these days...
A lot of Adapta flatness to the world, as well as FontAwesome as icons on the XFCE Panel.

Serial Numbered Cuffs on ABU Jacket

Just noticed about a week or so, they are really hard to spot, the stamp is sort of faded.
The inside of the cuffs of my ABU jackets have a serial number stamped, got these two on March 2017, and they're still rocking like they were made of steel.

Saturday Night (Sort of) Milangas

It is a terrible shame, but I didn't have time to take a single picture... I know, I know... I'm a schmuck, what can I say?
And it gets worse, because, this was also a special dinner, as it was to the date, the five year anniversary with the GF, since we started dating...
Anyways, the dishes were pretty much like the ones pictured here.

Not Sid Anymore (2)

And this time it was the turn for the beloved T60.
Changed the HDD and then made a Buster net install with XFCE, bye i3, thanks for all the tiling, most definitively not my cup of tea.
A first one this time, tho... Had a IP address conflict that prevented downloading all of the necessary packages to finish the installation, so I had to go back on the installer, and setup a fixed IP address for the T60 (on the Ethernet port, since the WiFi card of the lappie isn't recognized by the plain vanilla installer, it needs the non-free drivers added)

Sunday Night Pasta

Taken last Sunday, they were almost the "Ñoquis del 29" (it was actually the 27th).
By Sunday night things were back to normal, but this time no raviolis, but some magnificent ñoquis de papa, drowned on the GF Stew and grilled cheese, the way it should be.
