198K and counting!

And another thousand up, despite all the internet problems past week, the Spice Must Flow! Er... You can't stop music, more like it.
That magic 200K is right around the corner.
Also, started to use Firefox -on Devuan ASCII- which, even tho 32 bits, works A Ok with both Spotify and Last.fm scrobbling.

Saturday Night Pizza

A special Saturday Night Milanesas this time... A frigid and rainy night around here... And...
Not milanesas this time, but a wonderful pineapple pizza.
The GF was in charge of eating those dreadful red pieces of food.

Devuan ASCII Minimal Install

Made a minimal install of Devuan ASCII (32 bits) another one, on the Thinkpad T60, swapping the HDD, of course.
This time went for a truly minimal setup, choosing only "Standard System Utilities".

Nothing strange here... A plain vanilla encrypted LVM setup on a 320 GB HDD.

After the initial install, adding updadtes (a new kernel) and isntalling:

xorg openbox obconf menu

The whole enchilada uses some 1.4 GB of HDD.
Amazing the small amount of RAM that uses, granted, there isn't that much installed yet.

Movies During The Weekend

Ok, so, no internet (or at least, really spotty and lousy access) at home, so I couldn't post this before...
Now, from the GF's internet, here it goes...
Two movies and a re-watch -or an homage, if you will- during last weekend, some of the movies really strange ones.

The Grand Budapest Hotel:
A re-watch, for both the GF and me, but watching Isle of Dogs a couple of weeks ago left us with an appetite for more Anderson.

The 15:17 to Paris:
I wasn't even aware this movie even existed, and maybe things were right that way... Can't believe this is an Eastwood flick.

Slaughter House Five:
I've seeing this movie eons agao, and I'm not sure even got to see it completely, maybe got it on cable, and saw just a portion of it.
Not much experience with Vonnegut's wokr, only read Mother Night (I loved it) but really enjoyed this movie.

No Internet, No Life

Spotty or directly no internet at home since yesterday afternoon.
My guess, the same thing that happened in 2011.
Will see, come Monday the Internet Company will drop by to check things out.

Sunday Night Pasta

Mighty pasta for a cold, cold, cold Sunday night.
This time pasta from the supermarket, but, nevertheless, really good.
Of course, as usual, the GF stew does wonders.

The Current Devuan ASCII Desktop

Another one, I've been testing some "retro" themes.
I like this setup a lot more than the previuos Devuan screenshot I've posted on Monday.
But, I'm gonna try another thing with zhe here Devuan.

Saturday Night Milangas (With a Twist)

Yes, yes... They were milanesas, and yes, they were also oven baked potatoes and sweet potatoes...
But, also, yes, they were magnificent, out of this world Canastitas de Ricotta, hand and lovingly made by the GF.
I have been begging for these for ages!!!
Last time I had them it was nearly two years ago...
It was a wonderful, freezing night in the middle of our winter, with amazing food.

The Current Devuan ASCII Desktop

Not that excited about this setup, but I wanted to keep a record, just to get an idea of how things were at the beginning.
The idea is to try to keep it old school and on this case, light.
The Panel doesn't cut it, and the icon of wicd is simply dismal.

Devuan ASCII on The Thinkpad T60

Installed Devuan ASCII (of course 32 bits) on the T60 a couple of days ago, and I've been restoring files from backups, configuring stuff and using it more or less like my daily driver.
Everything works A Ok on the lappie, and the ssystem seems really snappy, even with an encrypted LVM, it uses something like 170 MB of RAM right after booting.

Nosediving Thru Winter

Amazing, a cold winter indeed, but there are no signs of snow whatsoever.
Seems like Monday/ Tuesday it'll be even colder, we'll see...

Movies During The Weekend

Only two movies this past weekend, not a lot of free time, I'm afraid.
Both of the movies, even tho quite different, were sort of animal related... The other were just filling the void ;)

Cobra:
The classic, the one and only Marion.
Wanted to (re)watch this one for quite some time, it was a first time for the GF and she loved it.
Today a movie like this might never get green lighted.

Rampage:
Entertaining and funny, what else do you need on a Sunday afternoon?
The GF and I loved it.

Ok, the GF skipped these three... Went to sleep...

A Brief History of Time:
Wanted to see this doc for quite a long time, I'm a fan of Errol Morris since I've seeing The Thin Blue Line.
Cool, but sort of annoying the decision of not adding a title

The War Room:
Ahh... The glorious 90's...
Another one that I wanted to see for quite a long time. Pretty good, but everything looks sooo dated nowadays...

Modern Romance:
Man, what a drag, even tho Kathryn Harrold was a hottie, this movie sucks. Boring, and also the hairs on the back of Albert Brooks freak me out.
It took me something like four attempts to finally seat thru this one completely.

Linux Mint 19 Problems: DNS & Lightdm

Been using it on the Optiplex 755 for a little over 10 days now, and these are the annoyances I've found so far.

1- DNS

This one is really annoying, but the solution is fairly easy.
I use hphost to block ads because it takes a minute to setup, it is easy and uses no resources.
One thing I've noticed right after I've enabled it on Linux Mint 19 was that I've lost web browsing, or more specifically, DNS resolution.
That's because on Linux Mint 19 resolvconf uses as DNS 127.0.0.53 instead of the regular (or the one it used abefore) 127.0.1.1.
The solution was fairly easy, edit the file:

/run/systemd/resolve/resolv.conf

with the DNS servers you want to use and then link that file to the /etc/resolv.conf file:

sudo ln -sf /run/systemd/resolve/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf

This solution is persistant to reboots.

2- Lightdm

This one is really, ultra annoying... This shit, I'm afraid, happens all the time.
After login back from a locked screen or a Suspend, and after successfully login back in, all I got was a black screen with a working mouse and cursor.
The only solution I've found is to switch to a virtual Console, and then restart LightDM, thru a:

sudo /etc/init.d/lightdm restart

Of course, anything open on the unreachable session will be lost after that, but at least I don't need to restart the whole system(?).

Both this is on a Linux Mint XFCE 64 bits with all the updates installed on a Optiplex 755.

It's a Celebration!

We had a little event around here...
Saturday night we had dined out, a late celebration for yet another anniversary.
She got a kraut chicken with sauvage potatoes on the side and I got patagonic chicken breasts with noisette potatoes and a fried chicken, for dessert vanilla ice cream on top of a brownie.
Damn the whole thing was good!

The O & L Are Dead!

On Friday tried, guess definitively for the last time, to fix the T60p keyboard.
This time went radical, so actually pulled the physical keys from the keyboard, to see if there was gunk underneath that prevented them to work.
Cleaned the hell out of it, even tho there wasn't any big shit down there, but, nonetheless, the damn "o" and the "l" don't work.
A real pity, that lappie has performed really well over the years but I guess this is it -got it since May 2012 and it was obviously already used then-.

Movies During The Weekend

A long weekend around here, with a Holiday on Monday, and lots of rain and cold on Saturday, so that means lots of time to watch movies with the GF.

Kittenhood:
A cat documentary handpicked for the GF, what else could it be with that title, right???
We both loved it, actually. Lots and lots and lots and lots of small cats on this one.
Oh, yeah, not sure if I've mentioned before, the GF has a soft spot for cats.

Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets:
An incredible piece of shit, a total waste of time, and of course, the thing is eternal.

Isle Of Dogs:
The best of the bunch.
Really, really cool movie, even better than Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Thank You For Smoking:
Mighty good, really funny and entertaining, the GF loved this one, it was a first time for her, a re-watch for me.

Of Unknown Origin:
Mighty good, I've seen this one like 20 years ago.
Peter Weller is a genius.

Heathers:
Another re-watch for me, a first time for the GF.

Gone Girl:
A re-watch, the GF skipped this one this time. I just felt like watching this one again. Couple of days ago I've also re-watched The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo as well.

Embedded (e)links(2)

Got back to text browsers lately...
So, I've been using links2 (with the graphical mode) these last couple of days.
Chrome seems to be a bit too heavy -with a couple of tabs open- on the poor little Optiplex.
As a side note, when dealing with pure text, for my untrained eye, or at least, on the sites I browse, I see no difference between using elinks and links2.

Handy Option on Terminal

I can't believe I have been using XFCE's Terminal for such a long time without knowing about this cool option to make each Terminal, (never mind it says Tab in the configuration setting) with a different color.
Comes handy if you happen to have a ton of Terminals open.

The current Linux Mint desktop

I freaking love the current look of Linux Mint 19, XFCE looks really slick.
Also, sporting my own XFWM theme Mint-Y-Borderless, the light version of the dark one, called Mint-Y-Dark-Borderless.
Been using it on the Optiplex for the last couple of days non-stop, except for some annoyances here and there the thing is fantastic.

Movies During The Weekend

A rather eclectic weekend... With a mix of just about everything...

This Is It:
The Michael Jackson documentary on Netflix, of course, this was requested by the GF, an avid Jackson fan.
Sort of entertaining, I guess... Specially if you know dink about Jackson

IP Man:
The GF watched this one, I glanced a bit here and there... Not my cup of (chinese) tea (doh!)

Marathon Man:
A mighty one indeed, re-watch for me. first time for the GF.
Damn this movie is good!

7 Days in Entebbe:
Interesting and well done, only thing didn't like was the parallel between the dance and the raid, it seems a little forced. or perhaps unnecessary.

Linux Mint 19 on The Optiplex 755

Installed LM 19 yesterday, XFCE, of course, and on this little baby PC, the 64 bits edition.
On a plain vanilla 80 GB HDD, go figure, a blast from the past...
Of course, as usual, the installation was a piece of cake.
Even on the Optiplex 755 meager hardware (the plain vanilla HDD, 4 GB RAM and Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual  CPU  E2180  @ 2.00GHz) Linux Mint feels amazingly snappy.

The (Sort of) Death of The T60p

Well all things come to an end I guess... And the mythic Thinkpad T60p is no exception to that.

Yesterday the fan started to make a lot of noise, and I mean a really, superbly annoying sound... Tried cleaning it, etc... But nothing.
This wasn't the first time that the fan on the T60p busted by balls.
On top of that, the keyboard on the T60p died (or at least, some of its keys) a couple of months ago...
The little lappie is slowly but steady saying goodbye...
For the moment, moved everything (keyboard, RAM, SSD) to the T60 and things are kosher, I was afraid that moving from the T60p's glorious screen to the T60 might be tough, but it is actually more than bearable.

Goes On And On And On

Yeah, the nose dive doesn't seem to stop around here...
Looks like the forecasters were right about the upcoming harsh winter for Buenos Aires after all... Usually they blew it; the always predict a colder than dead winter when the first cold days arrive, but invariably, at least so far, winter doesn't get that cold after all.
One thing tho, there is no mention of snow (damnit!)
