Budgie Briefly

Installed Budgie Desktop on the T60 today, just for kicks, giggles and shit.
Along side my beloved XFCE, of course.
I did not like it, not my cup of tea... Just like GNOME 3, everything looks gigantic.
Going back to my trusted and loved XFCE.
Installed Budgie on Devuan typing this:

apt install budgie-desktop budgie-indicator-applet

It pulls about 200 packages, some 110 MB and it expands to 320 MB.

Devuan Once Again

And so, just like that, it was time to go back to Devuan.
Selected the always trusty T60 and as usual, XFCE as the Desktop (onto of an encrypted setup).
The install went smooth as silk, and the system works A Ok, but that was what I was expecting, overall, I'd say that it feels just a little bit snappier than Debian on the same T60.

And now it was the turn of the mighty T60... Changed the HDD, so...
Good bye Devuan, hello Debian...
Nothing personal, I just think it makes more sense to run Debian at the moment.
The install, went with regular net-installer, went smooth as silk, the usual stuff... The WiFi doesn't work out of the box, it needs the non-free repositories, and encrypted LVM, so I can keep using Dropbox and XFCE, baby.

Another, yes, another Devuan Screenshot...
I really like this setup, too bad the T60 is so damn slow for today's standards, its screen is mind blowing amazing and the lappie still feels rather sturdy.

The GTK theme, once again, is Victory
I love this theme, clean, light, a really nice one; it goes hand in hand with the Greybird xfcewm theme.

This is right after the initial install, with all the updates (and a new kernel) installed.
The only extra package is zile, so I can use a decent enough text editor.

It is using just a bit less than 1 GB:

And another shot, seems like I'm kinda addicted to -sort of- ricing this Devuan setup...
This time, at last, I've been able to configure the damn wicd icons on theXFCE Panel.

Devuan ASCII: Replace wicd Icons on XFCE Panel

The stock wicd icons on Devuan, at least for XFCE which is what I've used, look ugly as hell...

(The wicd icon is that green/ black blob square...)

So, in order to make it look more modern, like this:

Download the new subtle icons from Alternate Wicd Tray Icons and then, on a Terminal do:

cd ~/Downloads/ 

and untar the downloaded file.

Then:

cd /usr/share/wicd/icons/hicolor/22x22/

And make a backup of the original icons:

sudo cp -r status status.ORIG

Copy the new icons, on this case, I'll be using the light colored ones, so:

sudo cp ~/Downloads/wicd-pale/* /usr/share/wicd/icons/hicolor/22x22/status/

If the dark icons were to be used, then:

sudo cp -R ~/Downloads/wicd-dark/* /usr/share/wicd/icons/hicolor/22x22/status/

After copying the files, changes are immediate.

And yet still the wicd icon on the Panel laughs at me mercy-less... Damn, that's an ugly icon...

198K and counting!

And another thousand up, despite all the internet problems past week, the Spice Must Flow! Er... You can't stop music, more like it.
That magic 200K is right around the corner.
Also, started to use Firefox -on Devuan ASCII- which, even tho 32 bits, works A Ok with both Spotify and Last.fm scrobbling.

Devuan ASCII Minimal Install

Made a minimal install of Devuan ASCII (32 bits) another one, on the Thinkpad T60, swapping the HDD, of course.
This time went for a truly minimal setup, choosing only "Standard System Utilities".

Nothing strange here... A plain vanilla encrypted LVM setup on a 320 GB HDD.

After the initial install, adding updadtes (a new kernel) and isntalling:

xorg openbox obconf menu

The whole enchilada uses some 1.4 GB of HDD.
Amazing the small amount of RAM that uses, granted, there isn't that much installed yet.

Another one, I've been testing some "retro" themes.
I like this setup a lot more than the previuos Devuan screenshot I've posted on Monday.
But, I'm gonna try another thing with zhe here Devuan.

Not that excited about this setup, but I wanted to keep a record, just to get an idea of how things were at the beginning.
The idea is to try to keep it old school and on this case, light.
The Panel doesn't cut it, and the icon of wicd is simply dismal.

Devuan ASCII on The Thinkpad T60

Installed Devuan ASCII (of course 32 bits) on the T60 a couple of days ago, and I've been restoring files from backups, configuring stuff and using it more or less like my daily driver.
Everything works A Ok on the lappie, and the ssystem seems really snappy, even with an encrypted LVM, it uses something like 170 MB of RAM right after booting.

Linux Mint Debian 2 On The T60p

Installed Linux Mint Debian 2 (Betsy) on the T60p this week -this time I selected Cinnamon as the DE- just to see how things were over there, it has been 5 years since the last time I've tested it.

This time I was able to encrypt my shit, no problems in that department.
But, I'm sucker I know, after the install was over, and after a couple of reboots to make sure the encrypted LVM was working Ok, I chose a local mirror... That sort of borked things up, in a bad way... After installing about 400 MB of updates and rebooting, I wasn't able to login thur MDM to Cinnamon. I was able to login on a Virtual Console, and of course, the LVM encryption presented no problems whatsoever.
I even try creating another user, and tested things with it, but same thing... I wasn't able to login to Cinnamon, that is, I wasn't able to go past the MDM login.
In the end, thru a TTY I had to change mirrors, get updates once again, but also, had to re-install Cinnamon, issuing a:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall cinnamon

After that, I was able to login onto Cinnamon.
Anyways, everything was kosher, Cinnamon is lovely, but, it is way too demanding RAM wise... Right after booting it was at about 500MB on idle, but that went thru the roof once I've start to open stuff on the t60p... Its 3GB simply don't cut it.
Will go with Devuan I guess...

Devuan on The Thinkpad T60p

Installed Devuan (via the Net Installer) on Friday, the idea is to see if a systemd free OS has a lighter push on the old T60p.
In the end everything went A Ok, as opposed as using the Minimal Live ISO, I've tried and tried with that ones, but everything failed using that image...
Baffled, but moved on, so, d'loaded the Net Install ISO, always 32 bits, since this is the T60, and onto the install I jumped.
The install was a piece of cake, using an encrypted LVM.

Chose XFCE (what else, right?) and nothing is new.
The install, once is done, uses around 3 GB of HDD (I have to delete the Games, BTW) and RAM usage, right upon booting, is around 166 MB.
Suspend (and Un-Suspend) works Ok, WiFi and sound too.
