Sunday Kernel Crud Deletion Mode

Did a little house cleaning on the old and trusty Acer... About 1.5 GB of old kernels down the drain... Seems like I've forgotten about the old and sort of dependable lappie.

The other day it was time to install a new one, and now time to delete an old one.
Life, right? What can I say... :p

Deleting Old Kernels

This is how I'm deleting old kernel nowadays.
The idea is to do it easily, but most important, safely.

First off, get the running kernel, never delete this one ;)

uname -a

And then get the list of all the installed kernels (and related stuff):

dpkg --get-selections | grep linux-headers && dpkg --get-selections | grep linux-image

This is a sample list of the output of the above:

And then, simply delete the ones you don't like:

sudo apt-get purge linux-image-4.4.0-119-generic\
 linux-headers-4.4.0-119-generic linux-image-extra-4.4.0-119-generic

In this case, deleting the kernel 4.4.0-119 and all related files.

This time, Opti!
The /boot partition was about 80% full, so whatever it takes to avoid this all over again.

A little over 1 GB worth of old kernels down the drain!

The little lappie that delivers not only got a new palm rest, but also got rid of almost 1.5 GB of old kernels.

Sort of an emergency kernel deletion...
It belched an error upon installing the newest one, because of lack of HDD space (I'm a such a schmuck!).
So, immediately I deleted old ones (Some 800 MB of HDD reclaimed), and executed once again the updater, but it belched once more...
Nevertheless, rebooted the box, and everything is A Ok, using the latest kernel.

Close to 1 GB of old kernel stuff...
Down the drain, yes... Bye!
This time even got a warning that the /boot partition was about to burn down in flames due to lack of space.

And then it was Colossus turn to flush all those old kernels...
Nearly 1 GB worth of HDD recovered.
No initial error, like happened with Opti a few days ago... Deletion went on without any problem.

It complained and belched an error message, but, go figure, the second time went ahead and deleted those 500 MB of files.
