So... (Goodbye) Cinnamon...

The Cinnamon thing didn't last long...
Slapped an SSD on the T60p, and went the XFCE way today.

So... Cinnamon...

Yeap... Some tests were performed... Need to replace the OS on a couple of lappies around here sooner than later, so, testing time!
Following a a very brief and very disastrous stint with Sid, gave a shot at Cinnamon, first on Debian Stretch and then on Linux Mint 18, mostly because that is the last Cinnamon version that I like, it is stupid, but that version is the last one AFAIK that still has the pointy menu.
Yeah, I know, it is stupid, but what a hell, the Computer is Personal since 1981 or so, right?
Kinda like my ongoing obsession with mouse cursor icon customization.
Cinnamon looks great (specially on the high resolution screen of the T60p) but compared to XFCE, the lack of options it is big, big no-no.

The current Linux Mint desktop

The upper screenshot shows my current setup, running a custom made theme, based on Linux Mint's "Mint-Y" but with some added elements from "Mint-X".
Taking a lot of inspiration from Cinnamon's Mint-X theme (lower screenshot).

Kernel Crud Delete Mode

Kernel Cleansing Day!
And this time, the X models get to get their sh*t slimmed down.
And BTW, now that I think of, the X220 its the only one left with Cinnamon... Will have to do something about that...

Living Out (day in and day out) of the X220 for the last couple of weeks...
An amazing machine that can give more than a few battles yet.

Kernel Crud Delete Mode for Sojourner

Close to 1 GB of old kernel stuff...
Down the drain, yes... Bye!
This time even got a warning that the /boot partition was about to burn down in flames due to lack of space.

Fucked ^ WiFi After Suspending?

This has been driving me utterly and fucking nuts for the last couple of weeks...
You suspend your lappie, and when you bring it back to life, WiFi doesn't seem to work, or, if it does, you either can't connect to your favorite network, or just can't even find your favorite network at all.
Seems to be a problem that sort of kills WiFi (pretty certain might be a kernel module that goes FUBAR), I've noticed this on different hardware (for instance on the X140e and the X220) and on different Linux Mint versions.
The solution seems pretty simple, I logout from my session before suspending the lappie, so far, it works like a charm, WiFi works A Ok once it comes back from Suspend and I login onto my user.
It might be a PITA having to close all open stuff and logout, but, personally I tend keep nothing up & running on a lappie running on batts unless its a necessity.

Kernel Crud Delete Mode for Opti

And then it was Colossus turn to flush all those old kernels...
Nearly 1 GB worth of HDD recovered.
No initial error, like happened with Opti a few days ago... Deletion went on without any problem.

LM 18 XFCE on the Thinkpad T60p

Well, today the GF is away, so it was time to continue with my little project.
Slapped the SSD that was on on the X140e (with Ubuntu 16.04 still installed on it) and made a fresh install of LM 18 XFCE on the T60p (32 bits, of course).
The T60p was running LM 18, yes, but Cinnamon, let's see if XFCE is a bit lighter on the lappie.

The current Linux Mint desktop

Yes, the Optiplex is alive and kicking!
Said it before, but I simply love the combo that the old Apple Cinema Display makes with the Optiplex.
A pleasure to use.

LM 18 Cinnamon: RAM Usage

Yeap... You can be scared... You can be really scared...
Almost 900 MB right after booting, and with nothing open.
Well, Cinnamon likes to eat its RAM, and then some...

Captain Nemo Wants Your Password

I came across this a couple of times already...
Both on the Optiplex as well as on the W530, not sure why on Earth it might require sudo to do exactly what tho...

The current Linux Mint desktop

This one in particular, the first screenshot from the new little monster, the X220.
Nothing much, just a comfy Cinnamon desktop...
Yes, I named the lappie Sojourner.

Linux Mint 18 on the Thinkpad X220

So, yes, installed Linux Mint 18, Cinnamon, on the the X220.
I say God Damn!
I've read a lot about the little laptop, but, hell, the MF flyes!
Pretty sure this is going to be a great lappie and I'll have a helluva time burning it to the ground...

Cinnamon: Change Your Passwd

A senior moment, if you will...
A little reminder... I always, no matter what, can't find the option to change my password on Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon...
IMHO, that option should be under
System Settings > Users & Groups...
And not on
System Settings > Account Details...
Or, at least, I believe it should include a link on Account Details to change the passwd.
Anyway, just a thought...

Cinnamon Panel Without Text

This happened a couple of times... Always when returning from a Suspend...
All the text vanishes from Cinnamon's Panel, so you basically get a "Text-less Cinnamon Panel" ;)
To fix it, restart Cinnamon by:

Alt + F2 and type r and press ENTER

In Praise of the Optiplex

Last week I've been using the Optiplex a lot.
Maybe its the combination with my ancient Apple Cinema Display and its resolution and size (1680x1050), along with my aching eyes, and Linux Mint latest theme, but the thing is a joy to use...

Yes, its slow, and sometimes, not too many, but sometimes it hiccups a bit during a heavy load (most of the time, Firefox related, the web nowadays is a needy bitch...) but those usually clear after a minute tops.
One thing I've noticed tho, if the load spikes, Cinnamon's wallpaper switches itself to the default one...
Go figure...
