In Praise of The Old Apple Cinema Display

I have my Apple Cinema Display monitor since February 2009.
I think it is one of the best computer related purchases I've ever done, even after all this years it still looks amazing, of course, this thing without the ADC Adapter is nearly useless nowadays.

MacBook White: Load Average Goes To Hell

All good things come to an end, I guess... The MacBook White Love Affair is over...
I'm afraid found a problem with my little MacBook. It looks like there is something that is spiking the load when charging the battery, go figure.
Is a real PITA, temperature goes to hell, and the fan, by Jeebus, the fan...

The Little Snowflake That Delivers

The little MacBook White is really good and kicking hard.
Yes, it is slow as hell, pretty heavy, hot and when the fan kicks in, the thing looks like a P-47 (which indicates that the CPU governor works), but ITOH, the keyboard is actually quite good, a bit bouncy, but nevertheless a nice one to use.
So far I'm happy as a hell with the lappie.
The battery must have around 1000+ cycles, it delivers something like hours of juice at the moment.
Suspend, sound, USB everything so far works A Ok; haven't tested the external monitor yet, only "glitch" haven't been able to get the CPU temperature thru the command line so far, the way I did it on the MacBook Pro (actually, the way that pretty much I do on every lappie) doesn't work on this baby.

Linux on a MacBook 3,1

Or, specifically, Linux Mint 18 XFCE (64 bits) on a MacBook White Late 2007 (Santa Rosa)
Easy as cake... Everything seems to be working A Ok.
The little lappie is ancient and slow (a feeble Core 2 Duo) but what a hell, it was a gift, and since I'm getting old, the 1280x800 resolution helps a lot ;)

A Crack In The LCD Continuum

A bad close up of the bump and cracked LCD from the MacBook Pro.
I've taped it to prevent the crack from spreading, but I guess it doesn't do shit.
At least I didn't do it, it was like this when I got it.

Vacation Hardware 2018

Got a (shitty) (powered) USB Hub for the MacBook Pro yesterday, 20 bucks at Best Buy.
The lack of USB ports is one of the biggest flaws of the little lappie.

The Return of Cupertino

Well, I got a couple of lappies yesterday.

A relative of mine, from beyond the Atlantic and above the Equator, came to Bs. As. and brought with him old laptops from the First World ;)
Long story short, I got a Macbook Pro and a Macbook.
I parted from Apple, my late MacBook Pro, on more than six years ago, but, I also wanted an Apple lappie for quite sometime (I was desperate to even consider getting a PPC one...), not to use Os X (not for me, not right now), but to run Linux; the thing is, I love the metal, one piece chassis, zero flexing, sturdy and nice looking beast.

Simply removed the SSD (along with the RAM) from the little lappie that delivers, the X140E, and installed on the new MacBook Pro, booted, and everything just worked, just like that, magic, man... Pure fucking Linux Magic.

The little lappie had one the LCD corners bumped and the glass of the screen its a bit chaffed as well.

Still Rockin'

...That is, the mighty Apple Cinema Display... Even after all this years...
The thing just works, they way it should... Connected to the Optiplex thru my now venerable ADC to DVI Apple adapter, hidden underneath the table.

Lubuntu 16.04 on the PowerMac3,5 (Quicksilver)

Yesterday installed Lubuntu on my old Quicksilver, mostly because I thought it would be a fun thing to do.
The install was painless, just remember to press the Option key, in order to select booting from the DVD Drive... I don't know why, but I was sure that if you press the C key upon booting, the PowerMac would boot from the DVD drive automagically... But it doesn't.
Then there was the partition your drive stage, I always do that by hand, and since I was installing onto two 80 GB IDE HDD, I did the partitions by hand.
I went with the following partition scheme:

Drive sda:
newworld     134 MB
/          70883 MB
swap        9000 MB
Drive sdb:
/home        81964 MB

One caveat tho, you have to be patient! The install takes time, and it looks like sometimes hangs, but it is still fighting down there... After all, the box has a Dual Proc @800 MHz and 1.5 GB of RAM.

For the love of Jeebus, I forgot how much noise a running PowerMac makes!

Mac O Ese?

So, guess sometime around last week Apple changed the name for its OS (that is, not for iOS, but the OS from the devices not much people care about) from Os X to MacOS...
Should I have to re-name this blog?
No shit way! A lot of water under the bridge since I named it, and nobody gives a fucking shit about this anyhow.

Reasons to get (or not) a PowerBook Nowadays

I've been lusting for a PowerBook, maybe even a 17" one, so I've written a little list of the pros and cons:

Pro:

• An ultra sexy and amazing aluminum body

Cons:

• PPC (so, not a lot of software)
• No Virtualization (!!!!)
• Small amount of RAM
• IDE hard disk drives
• Lousy battery life

From ADC To Eternity!

Yes, ADC, in 2014 and still rockin'!
A DVI to miniDiplayPort adapter in the middle, and the venerable ADC to DVI Apple adapter underneath the table.
Everything working flawlessly on Mint Qiana.

The current Linux Mint desktop

Connected to the Apple Cinema Display via ADC to DVI adapter, and then to a DVI to DisplayPort connector.
Something that keeps working A Ok even with Linux Mint and Cinnamon.

(Old school) Apple Cinema Glory

The little T410 connected to my old and trusty Apple Cinema Display, with all the glory of the NVIDIA card, at full 1680x1050 resolution.

It works like a champ with the laptop, specially since this T410 has only a 1280x800 resolution, and the LCD (even tweaked a bit thru the NVIDIA's configuration utility still looks like an arse...)
A real shame, since the T410 simply flies and the keyboard (given it is the Thinkpad's new generation) is amazing to type onto.

The current Ubuntu desktop

Connected to the Apple Cinema Display thru the DisplayPort > Apple DVI-ADC adapter > Apple Cinema Display.
With the NVIDIA driver installed the whole thing works beautifully out of the box.

Somedays you need PPC

And of course, Tiger the most beautiful GUI I've ever seeing.

Slow Saturday

Nothing much around here, getting ready for a crazy week coming up.

Tested Thor and luckily it works A Ok... After all the problems it gave me turns out that all it needed it was a PRAM reset, which, in the Quicksilver I have means only removing the internal battery for something like 10/15 minutes.
After that everything worked Ok, but honestly I don't see much use for it nowadays, specially since I moved away from iTunes to Rhythmbox.
