Unattended Minimal Desktop for Ubuntu install, sort of fail

Saturday installed Lucid Lynx on the old, heavy and extremely noisy Sony Vaio.

Made a CLI only install first, and then installed the Minimal Desktop for Ubuntu, one thing, tho, after the initial setup questions left the install and got out, returned about 2 hours late, to find the whole thing still going on.

Since the laptop already had an OpenSSH server up & running, connected to it to see what a hell was going on with install... The problem was the banner for the installer for some Microsoft font (bundled on the "Restricted" package) did a time out or similar, so, I simply killed the given PID, and the install process end A Ok.

The process was this chunck:

(Old school) Apple Cinema Glory

The little T410 connected to my old and trusty Apple Cinema Display, with all the glory of the NVIDIA card, at full 1680x1050 resolution.

It works like a champ with the laptop, specially since this T410 has only a 1280x800 resolution, and the LCD (even tweaked a bit thru the NVIDIA's configuration utility still looks like an arse...)
A real shame, since the T410 simply flies and the keyboard (given it is the Thinkpad's new generation) is amazing to type onto.

Connected to the Apple Cinema Display thru the DisplayPort > Apple DVI-ADC adapter > Apple Cinema Display.
With the NVIDIA driver installed the whole thing works beautifully out of the box.

Went back to the greys, my beloved Clearlooks & Gnome Colors icons.

Firefox doesn't seem to know

Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (magnet) isn't associated with any program.

Had this problem with what were the links to the *.torrent files on The Pirate Bay, don't know when did they change this, I don't download many Torrents from TPB these days.
Most of the instructions I found regarding this error were old, and do not apply to current versions of Firefox, so here it goes, in case I need to re-apply this:

Goto about:config
Right-click -> New -> Boolean -> Name:
network.protocol-handler.expose.magnet -> Value -> false

No need to restart Firefox, next click on a magnet link will prompt you to point what program to use, click your way to /usr/bin/transmission and you are done.

Time to delete old kernels

Last night deleted a bunch of old kernels from Sojourner & Usul, getting rid of 700 + MB of files...

Started using Chromium (again) during this weekend, and I just noticed this glitch...

What a hell is going on?

DropBox conflicts

Hate when this crap happens...

Isn't DropBox specifically designed to actually avoid this??? Why the hell there is a conflict to begin with??? The whole idea of DropBox is to avoid these conflicts and make the newest file "win"...

The only solution I can think of when I see that something like this happens, and to play it safe, is to actually erase the whole thing on the DropBox server and start from scratch from the source once again.

Giving Chromium (another) chance

That is, another chance in Linux, when I use Windows Chrome is the only browser I use.
So installed it today, mostly to use it side by side with Firefox.
This are a couple of add ons I install right after the browser is up & running.

This time, the Thinkpad T43 hooked up to the Apple Cinema Display, thru the Docking Station.

Zeus roars again

Installed Lucid on 120 GB HDD today... Want to give it another try, also, ever since start using Thinkpads, I never seem to have enough higher resolution screen real state to play with, my old Apple Cinema Display works A Ok with the NVIDIA's DVI port.

Things went pretty Ok with the install, had to use a plain vanilla CD, since it was impossible to boot the Zeus beast from a USB.
It took for ever to make the first update, about 400 MB of files...

A little Gnome 3 faking and I can say that I finally jumped onto the Elementary wagon...
Also using the Clearlooks theme for netbook and the Metacity theme Round-ad.
It does look a little more modern than the other ones I've been using lately.

Nothing really changes that much on my desktop... A slightly modified version of Metacity's Shiky Mint (mostly, no borders, and the buttons to the left IIRC...)

The old and trusty Apple Cinema Display hooked to the Thinkpad T140 via DisplayPort... On Lucid Lynx... With NVIDIA's proprietary drivers.
The thing works marvelously.

Got the adapter dirt cheap during the holidays, and it is actually rather nice to know that it is possible to use that hugemongous external monitor on Linux with this laptop.
