Another Jawa Saturday

Well, got me a new baby... Been pretty busy lately, lots of work around, but at least got this "new" computer for playing and ripping it open during this long weekend.

Yesterday cleaned its guts, its amazing how much of us ends up inside a computer, much of us in the disgusting sense of the word (dirt, hair, crap).
The box (named Zeus on my LAN) is not rocket, a Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.00GHz, but it certainly beats the shit out of Orbis Tertius (link 1 & link 2).
Lucid seems to go along quite well with the ASUS MoBo too.

Updates dujour

Orbis Tertius edition.
Turned on OB, and installed updates. A lot of updates. Really, I mean a lot of updates.

It took some 40 minutes to gulch everything up, nevertheless, after rebooting, everything seems fine, even the unsupported NVIDIA driver I'm using on that box.

Orbis meets Intrepid

Installed Intrepid on Orbis Tertius, went with the Alternate install, again.

The NVIDIA card that has, a GeForce2 MX/MX 400, it is not officially supported by Ubuntu, so it has no drivers for it, therefore, no 3D, no Desktop Effects, no Emerald with border-less windows.
The screenshot is using Metacity's compositing manager, thru the key '/apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager'.

But this time, to "raise" the whole thing to a Gnome desktop, instead of the plain vanilla:

sudo aptitude install ubuntu-desktop

Issued a:

sudo aptitude install ubuntu-desktop --without-recommends

It took about an hour to download the 200 MB of files, that expanded to about 850 MB, the whole install was using around 1.5 GB, but then installed Evolution, Firefox and Pidgin (yes, I like to suffer running hard apps on sub prime hardware) and I was told by aptitude that another 160 MB of HDD will be used.

Orbis Tertius' FreeBSD notes

In the end, I got rid of it, no particular reason, maybe because Gnome was a little slow; but the box it is not a rocket either; or maybe it was that compiling the NVIDIA drivers got a little troublesome.
The thing is, I got Ubuntu, Intrepid, to be precise, on the server.

These are some notes, since on the FreeBSD made a minimal install, and then proceed to download the whole Gnome desktop; had to do this because it was impossible to install the whole thing from the CD, just like on Ubuntu 8.04 was.

The first thing I noticed is that Googling on howto make a Gnome install over the internet, every site I saw mentions that you have to add the package 'gnome2', did that, but the Gnome install waas incomplete, didn't even start, had to also install the package 'gnome-session'.
Installing all that used about 800 MB of HDD space, and got me a desktop like the one posted here.

Hello again, FreeBSD

Installed FreeBSD 7.0 on Orbis Tertius today, scrubbed its Ubuntu 8.04 install.
Mostly because I want to test is NVIDIA (Compiz, Emerald, the works) support, want to see how fast it is compared to Ubuntu's.

Just like on the Ubuntu install, I couldn't just make a regular install, had to make a minimal one, and download all the goodies I like.
Here is the dmesg:

Orbis Tertius joy ride

Last night plugged in and took Orbis for a spin, haven't used it in a while now. Turned off all my other boxes, and decided to use Orbis for a while, perhaps the whole weekend.

Guess I am sort of a "computer amish", but the truly stark, low brow hardware from this box, a Pentium II @ 330 MHz, with 512 MB of RAM, seems rather good enough to handle what I'm throwing at...

Got the box to download Bit Torrents, handle email with Evolution, and browse the web with Firefox, yep, it is slow, specially Firefox, but is is certainly usable.
There are lightweight alternatives for everything I'm currently using, yes... But on this one, I like to test the whole thing using the Ubuntu plain vanilla versions.
Perhaps later I'll replace the default Gnome with OpenBox.

The Bit Torrent was a total surprise, quite stable, and it doesn't suck all the resources, downloading a couple of films (The panic in needle park & Rushmore) I can't get anywhere around here.

Transfer Evolution data to a new box

To a brand new Linux box setup, that is... As easy as 1,2,3,4...
On the old box, open Evolution, if not open, and click on: "File" -> "Backup Settings".
A new window will open, set the name, and the place to store the Evolution backup file.; it will prompt you if you want to close Evolution, click "Yes".
Let it do its job and wait, if the computer is as slow as Odin, you'll have to wait, I mean, really wait. Exporting my emails et all, some 500 MB of data, takes around 10 minutes or so.

Copy the file that has the Evolution backup from the old Linux box, to the brand new one, and then open Evolution; you'll see sort of a welcome screen:

Evolution welcome screen

Select "Restore Evolution from the backup file", and select the box using the drop down menu; the click "Apply".

Select where the backup file is located

And then, once again, wait.

Wait until all the files are copied

When this step finishes, your data has been totally transfered.

Ubuntu on high resolution

High resolution Ubuntu
Modified the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file from Orbis Tertius, and hooked up the box to my Samsung monitor.

Damn! The combination of Ubuntu + NVIDIA + a higher resolution looks rather sexy.

Too bad I had to settle for 1280x960 as the resolution, because at 1440x900 it leaves black unused space around the main screen, maybe the card is too old for this widescreen resolution? Or needs a new ROM, just like the one Thor has needed?
Nevertheless, it is a pretty cool resolution.

Here is a copy of the xorg.conf file:

# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.

Enable the NVIDIA card on Ubuntu

In three steps and a reboot, I couldn't believe it was so easy.
The problem with the resolution is due to the monitor I'm using, to work that out I had to edit the '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' file, but it wasn't that hard.

Ubuntu itself identified the card as a valid one, or at least, as possible candidate; with the icon on the upper Menu Bar, the one that looks like a small card.
After ticking the option "Enabled", it will download the necessary driver and install it.

On my case, I have a GeForce2 MX/MX 400 video card, Ubuntu used the nvidia-glx driver, once installed, it will inform you that you need to reboot the machine.

It will do so, by any means available :)

After the reboot, on my case, the resolution got actually, low, even tho, the driver got activated, this was the only part that I had to do by hand, and without a GUI, but, once again, it wasn't that hard at all, simply had to add the Vertical and Horizontal values for my monitor, and then add a few modes to the "Screen" portion of the file.

NVIDIA glory

At last, a Ubuntu screenshot that doesnt suck
Finally, it is running, in the end it was a piece of cake to make the NVIDIA magic happen on Ubuntu (I'll post some pics later.

There is a big difference between this one and the 800x600 that Odin can give.

Behold! Orbis Tertius, with its full 1024x768 glory!

Alternate CD Command Line Only install

Reinstalling Ubuntu (8.04) on orbis-tertius... Yeap, just once more...
But, this time will not install the server first, and then the Desktop, since I want to play with a full blown desktop, there is no point to it; besides, I want a clean slate to get the NVIDIA video card up & running.

For this one, I have used the Alternate CD, and I performed a "Command Line Only" install, the option to do such install on 8.04 is within the F4 key options.
Boot from the Alternate CD, press F4 key, labeled the "Modes" option, and then navigate with your keyboard to the "Command Line Only" and select it with an Enter; then press Esc to goto the main menu again, and select "Install Ubuntu" and press Enter.

Some Orbis-Tertius Ubuntu install notes

Most of the problems I had (or still having, if you count the NVIDIA video card...) were because this is really old hardware that it is not designed for this use, and it took all this "days" to get this baby on its feet because I had to do all the work during the nights, and -mostly- because it is way too slow, specially during the first two days, anything that involved the CDROM (booting form it, copying files from it) took for ever.

Day one:
Lotsa problems with the (pretty old) BIOS.
Had to set the HDDs to different IDE channels, since putting them all on IDE 1 did not work.
Set the BIOS to ignore the large HDD that will hold the /home partition (the BIOS simple chocked if it stumbled upon it)

Day two:
SQUASHFS errors galore, tried to make a regular install with Ubuntu, Xubuntu, and Ubuntu Server, in the end, only Ubuntu Server worked, but I had a problem with the BIOS that I did not forsee, and the system was unable to boot.

Day three:
Re-installed Ubuntu Server, after re-arranging the HDDs layout. On the IDE0 channel, the smaller HDD that will hold the /boot and the / partitions, as well as the swap, on the IDE1 channel, the larger HDD that will hold the /home partition.
This day finished with the installation up and running A Ok.
Friday, August 15th, in the early dawn hours.

Day four:
The same Friday, towards 4 PM started the install process to transform the Ubuntu Server, onto a plain vanilla Ubuntu (with Gnome desktop et all).
It took some 500 MB of file transfers, and about of 3 hours of setting up to get everything up & running... By far, the worst thing was the amount of time that 'scrollkeeper' needs.

Day five:
Used most of this day to set up X Window (that was fast & easy) and to do test after test after test to get the NVIDIA card working (this was slow & cumbersome)
In the end, the video card is recognized as an NVIDIA one, X Window does load it correctly, but it doesn't seem to be working properly, that is, I still have no 3D effects from it.

Passing the torch

Judith takes a bow, Orbis Tertius stands up
Since we are all immersed on the Olympics...
Judith -the one on the left- is no more, now Orbis Tertius rules.
Orbis' case is not as "stylish" as Judith's, but what a hell, it is a speed bump (of sorts), besides, that's progress, and you can't stop it, no matter what you try.

It is alive!

Well, Orbis Tertius is ready.
It took me a lot of time and testing to get it on its feet, it was like a total deje vu kinda a thing, like a time warp to the early days of the popular Linux, that is, around the early 2000.
Getting the whole thing to install, on that ultra (and effing old!!!!) crappy BIOS.
For the moment, I have settled for Ubuntu Server.
