Update to the max

I don't recall seeing this option before, I mean, for upgrading the whole OS release, on Update Manager.

More battery problems

This is a new one... Or actually, no.

I've had my share of battery problems before, but this is the first one with the robust Compaq beast Tango...
The problems I had were with the original battery that came with my 15" PowerBook beauty... (link 1, link 2, link 3, link 4).

Well, I say fuck it, let that battery bleed the Linux death of laptop batteries.
BTW, here is some information on howto disable that pop on Ubuntu:

New (monster) baby

Last Thursday got a new baby to play with.
An old Sony Vaio PCG FRV37, it is bulky, heavy, hot and by god, noisy; but, for the love of Jeebus, it has a quality build, this one must be about 8 years old, and it has been thru hell and hight water, and it is still solid as a rock (I mean hardware wise).

The only problem is the noise, it is way noisier than my Quicksilver DP 800 MHz which is saying a lot... I have disassembly it, cleaned a bit the fans, etc, but it did not got any better...
Right now has a 160 GB HDD, 768 MB RAM and Jaunty (32 bit, of course).

Meta Composite

I'm testing Metacity's own composite engine on Tango.
It looks rather nice (I'm a sucker for the drop shadow effect, what can I say...) Noticed a thing, tho, after a reboot, you have to re-enable it in order to the Panels to have drop shadows once again.

Yeah, the one from the last Thor Desktop...
It looks rather cool on Tango.

Error While Generating message list

Evolution simply fsck me yesterday morning.
Had to re-generate the DBs in order to continue using... Have to say that this was a first for me, even tho Tango had quite a few lockups, specially when it was running EXT 4, never had any issue with Evolution after a crash. But, yesterday out of the blue, and after a night open receiving emails, something I do all the time with Tango, it crapped on me.

After a minute or so Googling, found the answer:

Evolution unable to generate folder list

This is what I did:

sudo aptitude install sqlite3

Execute this:

cd ~/.evolution/mail ; for i in `find . -name folders.db`; do echo "Rebuilding Table $i"; sqlite3 $i "pragma integrity_check;"; done

Spitted this:

tango:~$ cd ~/.evolution/mail ; for i in `find . -name folders.db`; do echo "Rebuilding Table $i"; sqlite3 $i "pragma integrity_check;"; done
Rebuilding Table ./imap/whatever@xxxx.xxxxx.xxx/folders.db
*** in database main ***
Page 26986 is never used
Page 26988 is never used
Page 27311 is never used
Page 27336 is never used
Page 27375 is never used
Page 27382 is never used
Page 27400 is never used
Page 27480 is never used
SQL error: database disk image is malformed
Rebuilding Table ./local/folders.db
ok
Rebuilding Table ./vfolder/folders.db
ok
tango:~/.evolution/mail$

After that:

tango:~/.evolution/mail$ killall evolution-alarm-notify evolution-data-server-2.26

And then deleted:

rm ./imap/whatever@xxxx.xxxxx.xxx/folders.db

Problem gone... Downloaded my emails form the IMAP server, and everything was kosher once again with me and my Evolution.

Jaunty re-installation (4)

And now, the icon set!

My favorite Gnome icons are the one from GNOME Colors, but, the latest releases don't really cut it for me... They have a few icons that are not totally kosher with the whole Ubuntu Browns, IMHO.

So I keep using an older release I kept around, so here it goes, the customized package with just the icon set color I like and the version I like.

GNOME Colors customized package (5 MB)

Using this release requires that you issue this after the install, even tho Iḿ using Jaunty:
sudo rm -f /usr/share/icons/gnome/scalable/places/inode-directory.svg
sudo rm -f /usr/share/icons/gnome/32x32/places/inode-directory.png
sudo rm -f /usr/share/icons/gnome/24x24/places/inode-directory.png
sudo rm -f /usr/share/icons/gnome/22x22/places/inode-directory.png
sudo rm -f /usr/share/icons/gnome/16x16/places/inode-directory.png
sudo rm -f /usr/share/icons/gnome/icon-theme.cache
sudo gtk-update-icon-cache -qf /usr/share/icons/gnome

And logout or reboot.

Jaunty re-installation (3)

My beloved-always-installed Firefox extensions.

They go along with my two other Firefox "tweaks" right from the get go on any install:

Jaunty re-installation (2)

On this one I'm gonna leave aside Emerald, and most importantly, my beloved Human Tiger, for no particular reason, except for trying new things :)

Right now, I'm trying to run my Jaunty as stock as possible can, and using the Human theme, but I've modified the window borders in order to:

- Have square bottom corners.
- Reduce as much possible the border of the screen.

This is the modification I did on the file:

/usr/share/themes/Human/metacity-1/metacity-theme-1.xml

The first line is the original entry, now commented out:

Jaunty re-installation (1)

Re-installed on Monday night...

What can I say? Nothing!!!

I was having a bit of a problems with the system, I suspect it was the EXT 4 file system.
This time, switched back to EXT 3, let's see what the wind brings...
