Unattended Minimal Desktop for Ubuntu install, sort of fail

Saturday installed Lucid Lynx on the old, heavy and extremely noisy Sony Vaio.

Made a CLI only install first, and then installed the Minimal Desktop for Ubuntu, one thing, tho, after the initial setup questions left the install and got out, returned about 2 hours late, to find the whole thing still going on.

Since the laptop already had an OpenSSH server up & running, connected to it to see what a hell was going on with install... The problem was the banner for the installer for some Microsoft font (bundled on the "Restricted" package) did a time out or similar, so, I simply killed the given PID, and the install process end A Ok.

The process was this chunck:

This austere, minimalist one is from Usul, the Thinkpad T410 beauty... Trying to keep things small & easy looking.

Compiz settings thru gconf-editor

There is a nice and easy way to modify the drop shadow effect (actually you can edit just about any Compiz Desktop Effect setting) without the need to install any extra program.

Simply start up gconf-editor and browse to: /apps/compiz/plugins

Here is a little screenshot of the settings and the result on Hercules as of today.

The default Gnome you see -right- after an installation of Minimal Desktop for Ubuntu. This is on the mighty mighty Hercules, the Sony Vaio test workhorse.

Unwanted Ubuntu crud (4)

Actually, this not unwanted, but, is a left over, and since the idea of these is getting rid of stuff that uses HDD space, SSD space that is; this one does.
If you removed Chromium from your system, check for this two directories:

~/.cache/chromium
~/.config/chromium/

These two dirs were using about 125 MB of HDD space, and that only after a very short Chromium usage.
I've tested Chromium a bit, and even tho it looks rather nice, it is not my cup of tea, I'm too used to Firefox by now...
