Linux Void on The Dell Inspiron 1000

Last night (finally) installed Linux Void on the old, noisy and hot as hell Inspiron 1000.
The install went perfect, sort of looks like a FreeBSD or OpenBSD installer.
Used the Live XFCE image, 32 bits, of course; only drawback is that the installer doesn't offer the option to encrypt neither your $HOME nor an LVM.

Time To Bring Back The Beast

This time I guess it should run Linux Void...
The old faithful HDD on the lappie died about a month ago, time to get a new life!

Goodbye Ole Buddy

Today the HDD on the trusty Inspiron 1000 died.
Along the years it torrented nearly 2 TB thru its plates, may it rest in peace.

Stuck Plymouth With Encrypted LVM

Every time the little Dell Inspiron 1000 boots, it gets stuck on the Plymouth window to type the LVM passphrase (the picture on the right) it sort of looks like a scaling problem.
Only solution is rebooting.
After that, you'll be in front of a GRUB menu, select the regular boot, and this time the passphrase prompt will be the "fallback" one, and of course, this time things will work.

Making Linux Mint Smaller

Continuing with the LM 18 install on the Dell Inspiron 1000 that I di yesterday, it was time to remove unwanted programs, bear in mind that the lappie will have a very specialized use, therefore I can remove a lot of stuff that I'm positive I won't be needing.
When I started the base install (with all updates installed) it was like this:

/dev/mapper/mint--vg-root   54G  5,8G   46G  12% /

Right now (and I plan to keep removing stuff) it is like this:

/dev/mapper/mint--vg-root   54G  4,3G   47G   9% /

To get back those GBs I removed:
  • Libreoffice
  • Gimp
  • Foreing fonts
  • Banshee
  • Pix
  • Hexchat
  • Xfburn
  • Thunderbird
  • Pidgin

More Life For The Little Inspiron

So, it was time to upgrade the OS on the mighty Dell Inspiron 1000.
Yes, the little laptop is still alive and kicking like a mean MF, thank you.
Even after all these years of abuse and more abuse, it just won't give up, what can I say?
The battery, no doubt about it, is nothing more than dead weight, but what a hell, the thing must have something like 12 years or so.
It was running an ancient release of Linux Mint, with MATE mind you... Don't even remember when I made that install.
Of course, switched to Linux Mint XFCE (32 bits doh!).

Lubuntu on the Inspiron 1000

Time to dust off the trusty (and freaking old) Inspiron 1000...

Made the install on a 20 GB HDD, with 256 MB of RAM (the Inspiron has a Celeron @2.20 GHz).

It is barely usable (it took forever to install the updates right after the install), but I wanted to give it a shot, in order to get a taste of how Lubuntu performs and looks on my (really, really) ancient and under powered lappies.

Pros:

  • Lightweight (Doh!)
  • Looks rather nice
  • Cursors are a piece of cake to configure like I want them
  • Somehow easy to remap the CAPS LOCK key to CRTL
  • Easy to configure in general

Cons:

  • Windows are square, in the 4 corners

To Be Done:

  • Setup global Emacs keybindings
  • Remove the username from the login window

D'load sh*t lappie

Made a lean and mean install on the ancient Dell Inspiron 1000 lappie.
Went with an Ubuntu Minimal install, and on top of it a barebones XFCE; the whole thing took about 2 hours tops.
768 MB of RAM and a 80 GB HDD.
The thing feels pretty snappy.
I'm having a bit of trouble configuring the mouse pointer and getting the CAPSLOCK working as and extra Ctrl key.
Guess I'll have to use the old X Window DOT files config magic.

Precise Pangolin Minimal Install with MATE

Been using Precise Pangolin for about a week or so (mostly with GNOME 3), I like it so far, but I'm sort of missing GNOME 2... So comes MATE to the rescue.

GNOME 3 with a handful of extensions mimics its predecessor quite well, but it is not the same thing, and the same goes for the so called Fall Back alternatives; Unity is not my cup of tea, at least for the moment...

A viable alternative, then, might be Debian's Squeeze, but, I do like the 5 years of updates for a desktop that Precise Pangolin's LTS offers.. I'm old, and lazy, and I quite like the LTS's ability to install and forget; on my laptops (mostly old Thinkpads) Lucid Lynx didn't had a major problem with the myriad of updates along the years.

This is a quick test I did on a Dell Inspiron 1000 (Mobile Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.20GHz) with 768 MB of RAM and a 20 GB IDE HDD.

Install Precise Pangolin, from the Mini CD installer, making it as thin and as unbloated as possible, tried using the Alternate CD installer, but, even burned to CD I got the same error than before...

After that, and after installing any necessary updates, make a full fledged MATE installation, with the CLI only installation the system will be using about 1 GB of HDD

voyager:~$ df -ah
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 17G 1.2G 15G 8% /
proc 0 0 0 - /proc
sysfs 0 0 0 - /sys
none 0 0 0 - /sys/fs/fuse/connections
none 0 0 0 - /sys/kernel/debug
none 0 0 0 - /sys/kernel/security
udev 335M 4.0K 335M 1% /dev
devpts 0 0 0 - /dev/pts
tmpfs 137M 280K 137M 1% /run
none 5.0M 0 5.0M 0% /run/lock
none 342M 0 342M 0% /run/shm

Install some programs I need and the necessary X Window:

voyager:~$ sudo apt-get install xorg emacs23-nox openssh-server

And then add the MATE repository to the bottom of the sources.list file:

voyager:~$ sudo emacs /etc/apt/sources.list

Add this:
## -----------------------------------------------
## MATE
deb http://packages.mate-desktop.org/repo/ubuntu precise main
## -----------------------------------------------

Then start the proper MATE installation:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install mate-archive-keyring
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install mate-core

It will need to download 182 MB and installs about 500 MB of files.
After the installation is complete, the system will be using about 2 GB of HDD.

sudo apt-get install mate-desktop-environment

This will download 17 MB and use 42 MB HDD. Be aware there is an interactive setup involved, for the program hddtemp.

When that finishes, you can start using it, by typing:

startx

After that, install other apps as needed:

sudo apt-get install chromium-browser pidgin

Only app I'm missing, but, really, really missing is Gnome Global Menu...
The laptop feels quite snappy.

The Real Unknown

Just netflixed Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery.
The amazing Ken Burns documentary fills in -with amazing landscape cinematography- pretty well the Ambrose book I read almost 3 years ago.

Windows 7 on the Dell Inspiron 1000

Installed today, after playing yesterday with Linux Mint 12 on the same laptop.
Loaded a bigger HDD, in this case, a beast of 60 GB go figure, and a little more of RAM I found, maxxing the memory to 768 MB.
Installation went fine -following my own USB key instructions-, took about an hour (from a USB key), the only remarkable thing, after the installation was over, there was no NIC adapter listed (the laptop has only a NIC card, no builtin WiFi adapter).
Easily worked out after installing the first set of Updates, but, in order to do so had to use a PCI D-Link DWL-G630 WiFi card that got recognized out of of box open sticking it onto the PCI bay.

The Inspiron 1000 only has a 1024x768 LCD and a video card that is incapable of delivering Aero Desktop Effects, but nevertheless the screen seems clear enough to use day in day out, particularly the Chrome browser one.

Installed the Windows 7 email client, that, believe it or not, you have to actually download because Windows 7 doesn't include it, even tho it is called "Something or other Essentials"... It took forever to get all the necessary updates once that "Essential" was installed.

Next thing, maybe tomorrow, will be actually using that Windows Mail Essential, and get all my contacts imported onto that.

Linux Mint 12 on the Dell Inspiron 1000

Installed it yesterday to give it a more run down spin than the last time, and mostly because I had the time =)
Of course, used the 32 bits version, got the CD size version, w/o the codecs, and booted from a USB key.
The specs of the lappie are nothing to write home about it, specially the RAM, only 512 MB shared with video.
Given the lousy hardware specs the Gnome session defaults to a "Fallback Mode", but, nevertheless the overall looks of the GUI are rather sexy; the only thing missing -at least to me- are the drop shadow effects.
Of course, this being Gnome 3, even tho I was on the Fallback mode they were quite a lot of thing that weren't customizable the way that were on Gnome 2... Mostly stupid things like removing the username from the top Panel, or trying to do the same to the Virtual Desktops applet from the lower Panel.

Taking apart the Inspiron 1000

By Jeebus, that little MF was a mess of gunk on the inside... Really disgusting stuff.
It was sort of easy to dismantle it, the worst part was the upper keyboard panel, and removing the monitor from its hinges, a really scary thing to pry the monitor cable off; besides that, simply "unscrew and keep track" kinda business.
Happy to say the laptop is up and working as usual, and, even tho all the gunk removed, still busting my balls with the running fan.

The current Ubuntu theme

Plain & simple, nothing fancy nor complicated for the poor and underpowered Inspiron 1000.

Trading Places

Switched the hard disk drives from Hercules, the Sony Vaio mighty (and freaking noisy) beast, to the new portable baby I got, the Inspiron 1000.

This being Linux and all, I had to do absolutely nothing, besides switching the actual hard drives, after that, the new drive inside the Inspiron booted, recognized the WiFi card, connected me to the Access Point and thats it, end of story.
Linux magic.
