To Developer, Crouton and Beyond!

On Monday switched the Chromebook Pro to Developer Mode and today installed Linux via Crouton.
Used this options to make the install:

sudo sh ~/Downloads/crouton -r sid -t\ xfce,touch,chrome,extension,keyboard -e

But it failed because:

touch target is not supported on Debian.

So I finally used this install options:

sudo sh ~/Downloads/crouton -r xenial\
-t xfce,touch,chrome,extension,keyboard -e 

The install itself it was breeze, I mean, there were no problems whatsoever, but it took something like 4 hours to download and install the whole shebang.

I'm currently running stuff on this new Crouton thing on the Chromebook Pro, to determine if I keep it or I nuke the whole thing and then disable Developer Mode to revert the whole thing and head back to the reservation.

Dropbox on ChromeOS

It turns out it is really simple... As in 1,2,3...
- Add new service
- Install new service
- Then select "File System for Dropbox", add you credentials, you are done.

Finally got my Chromebook Pro! This little monster of a laptop is quite amazing, thin and light as hell, and yet, sturdy.
Been looking for one like this for nearly a year, and, finally, got it!

Chromebook Lusting

This past week I've researched a lot about getting a Chromebook, no, not the little one; but a powerful one, the C100 is really under powered.
Looking for the Samsung Chromebook Pro, the Asus Chromebook C302 and, yes, maybe the one, the Pixelbook.
Leaving price aside, and just for the sake of lust and more lust, the only thing that is really stopping me is how close, how unfriendly to customization Chrome OS is.
The hardware of those laptops is amazing, specially the Samsung Chromebook Pro and the Pixelbook, (doh!)

Cascading with Style on Chrome

As a futile attempt to customize the cursor shape on Chrome OS I'm using a Chrome extension called Custom Stylesheet & Script, using this CSS snip:

}

  cursor: default !important;

}

But the thing works so so... And of course, it only works inside of Chrome.

Chromecast No Audio For You!

As expected, the Chromecast Audio Experiment finished without success...

Was sort of expecting that for Linux, even tho I'm running Chrome, but what a hell... Chrome "syncs" ok with the Chromecast Audio, but nothing happens, sometimes it even crashes the whole Chrome (not only the synced tab).

But, I was more optimistic when it comes to casting from a Chromebook... I thought that the thing being an official Google lappie, running on its own Chrome browser... You know the drill, thing might be smoother...
Anyway, exactly the same problem, it syncs ok, but it doesn't reproduce any music at all (strangely you can hear the volume indicator pip when you scale the volume up or down, but nothing else.)

Spiked OCD

I've just realized this... The little Flip has a missing rubber tip, the one on the right side of the keyboard.
Looked over all the previous Flip C100 posts, and is missing right form the first post.
Damn, I can't un-look that now! My little Lappiebook has a chipped tooth!
Damn, that shit drives me nuts!

To Dev & Write And Back Again

Well... The little Flip is back on the reservation.
That is, got it back under (full) control, even turned back from the Developer Mode.
The experiment I did to customize the cursor icons on Chrome OS went nowhere at all.
I'm pleasantly surprised as how easy got to be to get out and back onto the Google/ Chrome OS reservation.

Mouse Cursor Icons on the Chromebook

Yesterday moved my Asus Flip to the Developer Mode.
The idea is to customize the damn mouse cursor... So far it was useless, I failed miserably on the endeavor.

As always, all of this is with the sole purpose of getting rid of the dam I-Beam cursor, guess you could say that I'm on a crusade, since I've been doing this on every single OS I get my hands on.
On the chromebook, the cursor icons are stored on the directory:

/usr/share/cursors/xorg-x11/chromeos/cursors/

And the index.theme for the icon set is located on the directory:

/usr/share/cursors/xorg-x11/default/index.theme

With the contents:

Inherits=chromeos

What I've tried to use my custom cursors, so far was to create a directory on the $HOME for the user chronos, and place the cursor files there; tried using the directories ~/.icons/ and ~/.cursors/.
So far, the damn thing simply refuses to work, that is, it keeps using ChromeOS default mouse cursor icons.

32 When I Want It

Well this is strange...
I was under the impression that Chrome doesn't run on 32 bits boxes...
On Linux you can't install Chrome on 32 bit, you have to make do running Chromium.

It turns out you can't.
You're stuck with the default ones,
So this means that once again, I'm stuck with the fucking dreaded I-Beam... It drives me the fuck nuts, besides, now I'm older and that damn cursor is harder to see.

Mombook

My mother got a Chromebook Flip yesterday.
It replaces a now ancient Dell XPS I gave her (with Linux, of course) a couple of years ago, she seems to be more than happy with her new lappie.
Didn't have much time to tinker with it yet.
