Debian Squeeze on a Thinkpad T60p

Yesterday installed Squeeze on my Thinkpad T60p moster, got an 80 GB SATA drive that I have around and just for fun made a net install, in order to see hwo things went.

Given the Thinkpad is old, and of course, being a Thinkpad, everything works out of the box on Linux and on Debian; only thing that got me a little trouble setting up was the audio, specifically the microphone on Skype (had to fumble a bit with alsamixer on the Terminal) and getting audio (all of it) on a VirtualBox image of a Windows 2000 I have been moving from box to box for ages.

Since there is no way to encrypt your $HOME directory like the Ubuntu installer has, choose to setup the whole thing on a encrypted LVM, mostly to test how that would affect the speed of the system, compared to the usual setup I do on Ubuntu boxes, encrypting only the $HOME.

It was impossible to import the Rhythmbox files from a Precise Pangolin install, which was actually obvious, since it uses a newer version.

RAM usage was about half of what GNOME 3 uses on the same box with a Precise Pangolin installation, but, the encrypted LVM didn't felt like a burden on the system.
Of course, being Gnome 2, installing Global Menu is piece of cake.

Another Squeeze

Installed last Sunday on the lovely, heavy, noisy and hot Vaio laptop.
No problem at all during the install, did a net installation, only thing, using the graphical tool doesn't seem to offer the possibility to encrypt the user's home directory.
Of course, one of the first things I've installed it is the Global Menu applet for the Gnome Menu, it worked exactly as it did the last time I tested this.
And, as usual on this lappie, Suspend & Hibernate doesn't work (it only does on Windows...)

More on Gnome Global Menu

A little something I've forgot about setting up Gnome Global Menu on Debian Squeeze...
I've have added this to the "/etc/apt/sources.list" file:

#GLOBALMENU
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/globalmenu-team/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/globalmenu-team/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

And then issued the regular:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gnome-globalmenu

As I alredy posted, it belched a bit during the install, but it is working A OK.

A nice, darker Squeeze theme

A screenshot from Squeeze running on Hercules taken the other day...

The theme is called "Dark Looks" and it is a pretty darn good looking Clearlooks variant, obviously a dark one.

This one has the window buttons setup the way, the Os X way, I got used to since I've used Panther for the first time; and also has Gnome Global Menu & Gnome's composite engine enabled.

Squeeze that Menu

One of the most important, if not the most important, of the "Desktop" programs I use works A Ok on Debian, even tho it is not designed for that distro.

I mean the marvelous Gnome Global Menu, it is not an Appleism, it is simply godd sense, it saves you from wasting screen real state on crappy resolution lappies, period; that's the main reason I installed it on any lappie I get my hands on.

Specially on a lappie like Hercules, the Vaio antique, were the 1024x768 resolutions feels really kinda crowded...

For what I've Googled, in the end used the PPA for Jaunty, and it worked Ok, it printed a couple of funky warning lines upon install, tho:
